TRAvis county correctional complex

I currently share the transformational forces of yoga, meditation and mindfulness practices weekly with women who are currently incarcerated at the Travis County Correctional Complex. In the past I’ve led classes at the Lockhart Correctional Facility, Travis County Correctional Complex and Halbert Unit. The Travis County Correctional Complex is where people are held until their court date where they receive their sentence. Some women can be there for years and there is often a lot of anxiety in the air as their futures can be very unclear at this juncture. In addition, they are on lockdown for 23 hours most days due to staffing shortages. Some of the benefits the women have shared with me include a more peaceful mind-state, increased flexibility, greater presence in their bodies and the positive effect from some of the tools offered to manage anxiety, grief + anger. Hurrah! When they transition, many are curious and excited to seek out yoga in the outside world.

The Del Valle Correctional Complex accepts clothing donations on an ongoing basis that are given to people if they are released. On release, the cloths that someone was wearing at the time of incarceration are what they are given when they leave. For various reasons these cloths may not be usable due to the change of seasons, weight change or poor condition of the original cloths. They deeply rely on community donations to make sure that folx are released with cloths that fit and are appropriate for the season. If you have clothing you are donating to Goodwill, Salvation Army or other such organizations please reach out + I would be happy to bring them to the jail instead.

They are most in need of womens and mens shirts, tops, shorts, pants and shoes. Larger sizes are often in demand. They are also always in need of donations for their library. They love books in decent shape – fiction and nonfiction paperbacks. They aren’t able to accept hard back books or magazines.
